5:00 Transfer to San Cipriano
The journey from Cali to the San Cipriano Natural Reserve is a fascinating transition from the dry, sprawling Valley of the Cauca River into the humid, lush epicenter of the Chocó Biogeographic Region. This approximately 2-hour drive takes us westward, climbing over the Western Cordillera and descending into the dense tropical rainforests of the Pacific slope.
7:30 Brujitas Transportation
The “Brujita” is the legendary lifeline of San Cipriano—a motorcycle-powered wooden platform that glides along historic railway tracks deep into the Chocó rainforest. This thrilling 20-minute open-air ride carries you through tunnels of emerald vegetation and over crystal-clear rivers, providing a unique, high-speed vantage point to spot canopy birds and immerse yourself in the vibrant Pacific jungle.
8:00 Breakfast
After our arrival in the heart of the reserve, we’ll enjoy a traditional Pacific breakfast prepared by the local community.
8:30 Birding Starts
Our exploration takes us deep into the San Cipriano Nature Reserve, where we navigate a network of trails specifically chosen for their high biodiversity and proximity to the water. Following the course of the crystal-clear San Cipriano and Escalerete Rivers, we’ll visit various strategic hotspots to look for Chocó specialties like the Five-colored Barbet, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, and the Cinnamon Woodpecker. The combination of dense primary forest and open riverbanks provides a dynamic range of light and environments, offering photographers and birders the perfect opportunity to document rare species in one of the world’s most humid and vibrant tropical ecosystems.
2:00 Lunch
To cap off a productive morning in the field, we’ll gather for a traditional Pacific lunch featuring the authentic flavors of the region. You can enjoy a locally caught fish preparation, seasoned with regional herbs and spices, or opt for a fresh, hearty vegetarian dish.
3:00 Brujitas and Transfer to Cali
As the afternoon light begins to shift over the Chocó rainforest, we conclude our exploration and head back to the village. We’ll enjoy one final, exhilarating ride on the “Brujita”. Once we arrive in Zaragoza, our private transport will be waiting for the scenic drive back to Cali.
