Jorge is a professional Colombian biologist, birding tour leader, and wildlife photographer. With years of experience exploring and documenting Colombia’s rich ecosystems, he specializes in target endemic species, bioacoustics, and high-quality field logistics. As the founder of Pajareros Birding Tours, Jorge combines scientific rigor with an engaging, personalized guiding style to deliver unforgettable birding and photography experiences.

• Favorite Bird: It’s hard for me to find just one favorite birds, but I would say that I have an special like for the Tanagers and the Mountain Birds. Two of my absolute favorites are the Buff-banded Mountain Tanager and the Purplish-mantled Tanager.

• Favorite Ecosystem:The Andean Cloud Forest holds a very special place in my work. It gives me the chance to observe complex bird behavior up close, especially mixed-species foraging flocks. Understanding how these different species cooperate and interact helps me offer a much richer experience as a field biologist and guide.

• Favorite Bird: It’s hard to pick just one, but the Black-and-chestnut Eagle is my favorite. As a top predator, it acts as a vital umbrella species—protecting its mountain habitat automatically helps save entire ecosystems, local communities, and hundreds of other native species.

• Favorite Ecosystem: The páramo is my favorite ecosystem because these high-mountain ‘islands’ are home to unique endemic species and out-of-this-world landscapes. The cold, fog, and extreme conditions have shaped animals and plants that are perfectly adapted to live in these complex natural networks.

Camilo is a passionate Colombian birding guide with a lifelong dedication to wildlife and nature observation. Driven by a deep love for Colombia’s biodiversity, his razor-sharp field senses, keen ear for bioacoustics, and extensive experience on the trail make him an exceptional spotter in the field. • Favorite Bird: Choosing a favorite bird in the Colombian Andes is almost impossible, especially with so many colorful species. However, I would pick the Andean Condor because of its size and majestic presence. Soaring high over the Andes, it plays a vital ecological role by cleaning up the environment and preventing the spread of diseases. It is truly the king of the Andes.

• Favorite Ecosystem: I love the high-Andean cloud forest because of its misty, atmospheric landscapes. This humid environment creates essential natural corridors for wildlife to travel between habitats, making it one of the best places to observe a stunning diversity of birds.

Biologist, Herpetologist & Birding Guide

Germán is a biologist and birding guide driven by a deep passion for nature observation and photography. Over the last decade, I have dedicated myself to exploring Colombia’s biodiversity—from tracking birds and searching for amphibians and reptiles to photographing butterflies in the high Andes. My scientific work includes research on high-Andean frailejones (Espeletia) and their genetic resilience to climate change. I love sharing the wonder of life with travelers, helping them discover the unique species of our ecosystems.

• Favorite bird: The Opisthocomus hoazin, or ‘stinkbirds’, as they are commonly known in parts of the Colombian Amazon. Beyond their unusual digestive system, which ferments the leaves they consume and gives rise to their common name, I am fascinated by their rare and still mysterious phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary traits, which have led to their classification in unique taxonomic categories: an order (Opisthocomiformes) and a family (Opisthocomidae). They are like living dinosaurs!
• Favorite Ecosystem: My favorite ecosystem is the tropical rainforest, and I am particularly fascinated by the forests found in the Colombian Pacific. These are areas inhabited by multicolored amphibians, fascinating tanagers, many reptiles, and fantastic plants.
